On Isıs, Islam and Quranic verses

Dear (!) propagandist of anti-Islam, proponents of Isis (if any reading this somehow by chance) and the one who remains indifferent to the violence ongoing, or sustain a position somewhere in-between:

Due to the terrorist attacks that have been carried out by Isis, some people pick Quranic verses out of their context and publish them in their social media accounts as an attempt to prove that Islam confirms such violent acts. This article is written in response not only to the ones that skew the meaning of Quranic verses, but also for the ignorant Muslims who are unaware of their own religion.

The aim of this piece of writing is to show that it is impossible for Quran to approve of such violent acts and besides, a Muslim is NOT allowed to fight against non-believers / non-Muslims. S/He is only allowed to fight for FREEDOM of religion, which is a basic human right as stated in the UDHR.

There is a basic rule of the Quran, it must be read as a whole. A Muslim is not permitted to accept some verses out of it and deny some others; so if there are any Muslim sympathizers of terrorism reading this, please pay special attention to the verse below and the verses that will be presented throughout the article:

Al-Baqarah Surah 2:85 ...Then is it only a part of the Book that you believe in, and do you reject the rest?
To start with, according to the Quran, this life is a temporary TEST with the function of confronting us with ourselves and everyone has the chance to use his / her free will in favor of choosing either good or bad, true or false. Because here and Hereafter are complementary and people will reach eternal punishment (hell) or eternal prize (heaven) according to how well they perform in this temporary test.

According to the Quranic verses, if God had wanted, He could have made everyone believe and surrender to Him without any exception. However, that’s not His system; instead He has established a system in which people can / should question the transiency of life and make their own decisions:

Jonah (Yunus) Surah 10:99 If it had been thy Lord's Will, they would all have believed,- all who are on earth! Wilt thou then compel mankind, against their will, to believe!

As one can see in the verse above, non believers CANNOT be FORCED to believe or surrender to Allah. Believing is a matter of choice for this world. But, in the Hereafter (after death), as everyone will have been confronted with the REALITY, noone will have the opportunity to object. They will either be sent to Heaven or Hell according to their performance in this world.

Here... one can choose to help people in need or not, one can choose to be a virtuous, moral person or not, one can choose to be a monotheist or not, as long as he / she is ready for the outcome in the Hereafter. The Quran gives a piece of advice and  is a REMINDER:

The Embellishment Surah 43:44 The Quran is indeed a reminder, for you and for your people; and soon shall you (all) be brought to account.

Actually, the principal message of Islam is simple and clear. It invites people to monotheism (the belief claiming there is only one omniscient, omnipotent God) and warns humanity about the unforgivable sin:

An-Nisáa Surah 4:48 God does not forgive idolatry*, but he forgives lesser offenses for whomever He wills. Anyone who sets up idols beside God, has forged a horrendous offense.

(* Idol worship is not forgivable if maintained until death. One can always repent from any offense, including idolatry, before death comes. For further explanation, see the verses 4:18 and 40:66.)

Unlike some other religious doctrines (like Christianity or Jainizm) Islam is NOT a  “love your enemy” (turn your other cheek to your enemy) type religion, though. But, it doesn’t even portray “non believers” as enemy:

An-Nisáa Surah 4:94 O you who believe, if you strike in the cause of GOD, you shall be absolutely sure. Do not say to one who offers you peace, "You are not a believer," seeking the spoils of this world. For GOD possesses infinite spoils. Remember that you used to be like them, and GOD blessed you. Therefore, you shall be absolutely sure (before you strike). GOD is fully Cognizant of everything you do.

The enemy is not the non-believers (non Muslims), the enemy is the WARMONGERS. They are the ones who don’t allow Muslims to believe in Islam, the ones who torture Muslims just because they believe in Islam.  Respect, tolerance and justice  is an indispensible doctrine of the Quran:

Al-Mumtahana Surah 60:8 Allah forbids you not, with regard to those who fight you not for (your) Faith nor drive you out of your homes, from dealing kindly and justly with them: for Allah loveth those who are just.

God recommends that people should have MUTUAL respect for each other and wants them live in peace and harmony.

The Romans (Rum) Surah 30: 22 And among His Signs is the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the variations in your languages and your colors: verily in that are Signs for those who know.

And a Muslim is allowed to fight only in self-defence:

Al-Baqarah 2:190 Fight in the cause of Allah those who fight you, but do not transgress limits; for Allah loveth NOT transgressors.

An-Nisáa Surah 4:90 ... if they leave you alone, refrain from fighting you, and offer you peace, then GOD gives you no excuse to fight them.

As one can clearly see in the verses, it is impossible to justify terrorism and slaughter of innocent civilians, whichever belief system they support.

Last but not least, some people assert that the Quran portrays Christians and Jews as enemies whom Muslims have to fight against. Actually, when verses are not picked out of their context, again it will be clearly seen that those are the ones who pressurize Muslims and do not allow them believe in whatever they want. Muslims are even allowed to marry the Christians or Jews, without converting them to Islam, as long as they do not support any form of polytheism. And whether they are polytheists or not, a Muslim is not allowed to fight against a peace supporting human being.

TO SUM UP:

-Aggression is strictly forbidden in the Quran. Fighting is permitted only in self-defence.

-A Muslim can not fight against any people or parties because they are non-Muslims. He / She is only allowed to fight for his / her own FREEDOM of religion if he/ she is under oppression. Even in such a case, emigration as a solution is encouraged.

- Only if attacked, is one permitted to fight back. If the other party refrains from aggression and offers peace, a Muslim has to stop fighting.

And one final verse from the Quran which refutes the satanic justifications of the terrorists:

Al-Baqarah Surah 2:194 ... if anyone commits aggression against you, attack him just as he has attacked you - but remain conscious of God, and know that God is with those who are conscious of Him.

Peace
